New Eyes for the Needy

Since 1932, New Eyes for the Needy in nearby Short Hills, New Jersey, has improved the eyesight of more than 7,000,000 people in the U.S. and around the world. Cash donations and the proceeds from the sale of scrap precious metal, hearing aids, jewelry and giftware are used to purchase new prescription eyeglasses for the poor in the United States. For each $60 donated in cash or raised through the resale of donated items, New Eyes can purchase a pair of new prescription eyeglasses for a U.S. resident in need.

Reusable eyeglasses are sorted by volunteers and sent to medical missions and international charitable organizations for distribution to poor people overseas. Each new pair of glasses purchased by New Eyes helps an American child succeed in school, an adult secure a job, or a senior citizen read medicine labels. Their recycled glasses bring clearer vision to scores of people living in poverty overseas.

Paper Mill Playhouse frequently acts as a collection point for used eyeglasses. Most recently during our production of THE MIRACLE WORKER Paper Mill patrons donated hundreds of pairs of eyeglasses toward this worthy community partner.
